North And South
North and South is the story of friendship and valour.
Orry Main, a slave owner's son meets George Hazard on his way to West
Point. George is the son of a North American iron manufacturor.
The tv-series is based on the famous novel by John Jakes.
Book 1, Episodes 1 through 6:
A short summary:
Episode 1:
Orry Main(Patrick Swayze) a Southerner and George Hazard(James Read) a
Northerner meet and become friends while attending West Point; Orry
falls desperately in lve with Madeline(Leslie-Anne Down) and is
absolutely heartbroken when he finds out she's married cruel and
arrogant slave owner Justin LaMotte(David Carradine).
George and Orry find thenmselves under the command of Cadet
Bent(Philip Casnoff) a man with no scruples.
Episode 2
George and Orry graduate from West Point just in time for the
Mexican/American war. They are shocked to find themselves under the
command of Elkanah Bent(Philip Csnoff) who, banished from West Point
obtains a field commision through the use of blackmail.
Orry inhures his leg during a suicide patrol, ordered by Elkanah Bent
and heads home, a different person; George gets engaged to Constance
Flynn(Wendy Kilbourne), daughter of army surgeon Colonel Patrick
Flynn(Robert Mitchum).
Priam(David Harris) a slave on the Main plantation runs away.
Episode 3
While tensions between the North and the South heat up, Tillet
Main(Mitchell Ryan) dies and Orry becomes master of Mont Royal, while
George marries Constance and becomes manager of Hazard Iron.
Charles Main(Lewis Smith) and Billy Hazard(John Stockwell) become
friends and plan to attend West Poimt together.
Orry and Madeline can no longer deny their passion for each other.
Episode 4
In South Carolina, Virgilia(Kirstie Alley) encounters a slave
named Grady(Georg Stanford Brown) and aids in his escape. They later
marry and take up residence in a Philadelphia shanty while pursuing
their abolitionist activities.
Justin LaMotte kills Madeline's faithful maid and then makes Madeline
a prisoner in their home, making her escape with Orry impossible.
Charles and Billy graduate from West Point. Ashton's(Terry Garber)
indescretions result in pregnancy.
Episode 5
Ashton marries James Huntoon(Jim Metzler); George and Orry have an
argument which threatens their friendship and prompts Orry to drown
his sorrows in a bottle; Grady and Priam are killed at Harper's
Ferry and Constance gives George the good news that they are going
to have a baby.
Episode 6
Ashton is banished from her family after they learn of her elaborate,
but failed scheme to have her sister's bethrothed killed.
Madeline escapes her jailer/husband, seeks refuge at Mont Royal and
is at last free to divorce and plan a future with Orry.
With war certain, Orry visits his friend George-a proud new father.
They bothe know it'll be long before they meet again.
Book 2, Episode 1 through 6
Episode 1
Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Pennsylvanian George Hazard is
recommisiones in the Union Army while his friend and former West
Point class mate, Orry Main becomes a Confederate General; Orry's
amoral sister Ashton strikes up a war profeteering scheme with the
insidious elkanah Bent; and swaggerine Justin LaMotte mounts a raid
to take back his wife Madeline from her beloved Orry.
Episode 2
As the Civil War rages, Confederate General Orry Main weds his beloved
Madeline; shares a bittersweet reunion with old friend Yankee
colonel George Hazardwho saves his life; and stages a raid on the
illicit cargo stashed away by the profiteer Elkanah Bent and Orry's
insidious sister Ashton.
Episode 3
On the battlefront at Antietam Creek in 1862, Confederate captain
Charles Main confronts his friend and West Point classmate Billy
Hazard.
Later, after the battle of Gettysburg, Billy goes AWOL to see his
wife Brett at the Mont Royal Plantation in South Carolina.
Here Brett's evil sister Ashton drives away Orry's wife, Madeline
with the disclosure that Madeline is the daughter of a black
prostitute.
Episode 4
General George Hazard is captured and jailed in a dreaded
Confederate prison run by a brutal commandant(Wayne Newton) while
General Orry Main is wounded and tended to in a Northern hospital by
George's sister Virgilia.
Episode 5
While George shatters the dreams of power masteminded by Isabel
(Mary Crosby) and Stanley(Johnathan Frakes), Orry takes aim
at the conspiracy against the Confederacymounted by his sister
Ashton and her lover Elkanah Bent.
Episode 6
Bittersweet reunions and tragedy bafall both the Hazard and Main
families in the wake of the end of the Civil War, but the bond
of friendship sealing George and Orry is reaffirmed.
